About DRIV hydrogen

A one-of-a-kind hydrogen preparation facility.

New hydrogen tanks are delivered pressurised with an inert preservation gas, typically nitrogen. Prior to entering into service, this gas needs to be removed and replaced with clean hydrogen — through flushing. This is what we do.

At our hydrogen preparation plant at Kløfta, Norway, we provide hydrogen flushing at elevated temperatures — what we call Warm Flushing. This allows us to significantly reduce the amount of hydrogen required to remove the preservation gas and achieve the required hydrogen purity.

And instead of venting the hydrogen-rich off-gas, we capture it, recover its energy and feed that energy back into the process — maintaining the optimal flushing temperature.

Service 01

Warm flushing & first fill

The container arrives at our ATEX-compliant workshop at Kløfta and is conditioned to above 25 °C.

Warm flushing at 0.5–3 bar — using >90 % less hydrogen than cold flushing and eliminating venting of the off-gas.

Ready for first operational fill, with residual impurities verified at <300 ppm.

Biohydrogen production

Certified biomethanol arrives at our Kløfta facility.

The reformer consumes just 0.2 kWh of electricity per kg of hydrogen produced, compared with typically around 50 kWh/kg for electrolysis. The point? We can produce biohydrogen pretty much anywhere, barely touching the grid.

Biohydrogen produced on-site from certified sustainable biomethanol through steam reforming, meeting EU sustainability criteria for renewable hydrogen on par with green hydrogen.

Gas analysis

We take a gas sample from your tank or process line — at Kløfta or at your site.

The gas chromatograph separates the gas mixture and quantifies target components down to ppm level.

Over eight pressure cycles, the nitrogen content in the tank drops from 495 700 ppm to just 178 ppm. Purity climbs from 50.43 % to 99.982 % — comfortably below the 300 ppm requirement.

New Type IV tanks arrive filled with pressurised nitrogen, and the polymer liner can be permanently damaged if that pressure is released while the tank is cold. So we condition the tank warm in our ATEX-compliant workshop before flushing out the nitrogen with hydrogen in controlled cycles at 0.5–3 bar — a circular, emission-free flushing process that uses >90 % less hydrogen than the traditional method.

The process is standardised and predictable: 20 and 30 ft containers take 4 working days, 40 and 45 ft take 5. We confirm the schedule for every delivery as soon as your enquiry comes in.

A Gas Analysis Report for every fill, documenting impurities below 300 ppm, together with Flushing Quality Documentation — plus ADR transport documents, safety data sheets and agreements, all in one place on My Page.

For context, our warm flushing saves >90 % of the hydrogen a cold flush would consume, and 5–12 tonnes of CO₂e per container depending on size.

We produce it ourselves — steam reforming certified biomethanol at Kløfta: 240 kg a day, at 83 % efficiency. It meets the EU sustainability criteria for renewable hydrogen, on par with green hydrogen.
