Transporting hydrogen is one of the industry's best-known headaches: costly, complex, and often the slowest link in the chain. Our answer is to produce hydrogen exactly where it is needed. Mainly, that means our hydrogen facility at Kløfta — but we can also set up similar production facilities wherever they are needed elsewhere.

The engine is the M18 reformer. Every day it converts 2 040 litres of certified biomethanol into 240 kg of hydrogen at 99.97 % purity, drawing just 29 kWh of electricity and running at 83 % efficiency. Annual capacity: 85 000 kg. The facility was built with support from Enova — from approval to operation in 15 weeks.

Why biomethanol? Because simple is what scales. Biomethanol is a liquid: it stores in standard tanks without compression or boil-off, and it arrives by ordinary truck on infrastructure that already exists. Producing hydrogen from it requires a reformer unit rather than a full electrolysis plant, which lowers the investment threshold drastically. Electrolysis will matter in the future energy mix — we simply did not want to wait for it. To be operational in a fraction of the time, at a fraction of the cost, you choose the boring liquid.

What the biohydrogen does all day. Most of it goes into our own warm flushing and first fills, where hydrogen produced on the spot means no transport emissions and no supply uncertainty. It is the reason every container we prepare saves 14 261 kg of CO₂e — and the reason we can call ourselves the only emission-free operator in the Nordics with a straight face. Purity is not taken on trust either: every batch is verified by gas analysis down to ppm level.

Nothing leaves unaccounted for. Residual flush gas is combusted flamelessly in the CTC unit, producing exactly two things: water and heat. The heat keeps the flushing hall above 25 °C through the winter. The end of one cycle quietly finances the start of the next. Read more about how we produce hydrogen on the spot.
